3 Easy Masculine looks for Spring

Hey Babes-

Welcome to quarantine looks part II! I wanted to style some outfits that contrasted with my last post to show some more tomboy or masculine styles. Again, masculinity looks different on everyone but for me it means focusing on neutral colors to not distract the eye while building a silhouette that is more androgynous. As a queer woman I find dressing and presenting as androgynous very empowering because it allows you to encounter the world in a fresh way and present a different side of your personality. So without further ado, lets get into it!

Look 1: Everyday Vintage

For an on-the-go, stylish but easy look, I love an oversize tee and vintage denim. I find that the minimalist style is so versatile and just looks good on everyone. (Donatella Versace don't come for me!)

The straight leg cut of the jean helps to elongate your form and downplay any curves on your body, which creates a more boyish silhouette. The oversize t-shirt adds to this effect by drawing the eye down and making a box around your frame instead of hugging it.

(My face here says these self timer pics better work out)

My goal with more boyish looks is never to hide my form but rather to create a shape that's flattering while de-emphasizing curves and body parts that are typically associated with being feminine. I also try to pick out clothes that still reflect my personal style despite them being from the men's section so that I still feel like myself.

Jeans: Thrifted at Buffalo exchange Williamsburg. These are the light-wash vintage Guess jeans of my dreams. Please bury me in them. You can find similar pairs on etsy
Shirt: From Cafe St Henri (For those of you who live in Montreal, buy local!)
Shoes: Vans (wouldn't recommend the white ones per se because they look cool for about thirty minutes before you spill coffee or something on them. Maybe you could wear them as a house shoe? If you're uncivilized like that?)
Existential dread: brought to you by the american economy

Outfit 2: All Black Everything

For a bit of a fancier look I went with a patterned button down blouse, black jeans, a flat-brimmed hat and patent leather oxfords. An all black outfit comes off as polished and pulled together and is a go to for me in any season.

To make this look more formal, the accessories are everything. The leather oxfords and wool hat add texture in order to give a bit more personality in a monotone outfit.

If you want your look to come off as more androgynous, I recommend choosing clothes that downplay any "feminine" parts of your body. For instance, I opt for a bralette or sports bras instead of an underwire one to minimize my chest when I want to appear more boyish.

Pants: BDG (I've been buying this same pair of jeans since I was 16. I could sleep in them. They're not real denim but everyone has an exception)
Bra: Free people (Don't be fooled by how boho their shit is, I've had this bra since I was literally 17. Its indestructible and sexy as hell)
Top: Eva B Vintage
Shoes: Aldo
Zorro hat: Buffalo Exchange

3 Go-to Spring Looks for Femmes

Hey Babes-

While we all are still practicing self isolation or quarantine in Canada, one of the things that's been keeping me happy is dressing up, even if the only place I'm going to is the kitchen (or if we're really wild, to the farmer's market).

I wanted to share 3 "femme" outfits that make me feel good in my skin and are compatible with the somewhat frigid east coast spring weather. Of course, femininity looks different on everyone, and ultimately fashion is about self expression so it's good to keep in mind that there's no right or wrong way to express your gender or sexuality through clothes.

For me, feminine means picking form flattering silhouettes and wearing more traditionally feminine accessories such as hoop earrings or heels, but there's no reason why those can't be incorporated into a more androgynous outfit either. There are no rules to self expression!! And without further ado here's my first look!

Look 1: Retro Femme

For this first look I wanted to go for something that's easy to throw on with some of my closet staples : a white tee, light wash shorts and combat boots. High rise shorts and jeans are a must have for me because they're flattering on longer torsos and they give off a retro look.

This outfit is great for warmer spring days when you're moving around and just need a little bit more room to breathe. I like this look because it feels like something that's been in style for decades- I can picture this being rocked by a backup dancer in Grease. Overall it makes me feel pulled together, a little punk, and definitely good in my skin.

In order to personalize the look and/or make it give off more queer vibes, I'd recommend playing with accessories (and cuff those sleeves!!) When the color scheme of what you're wearing leans towards neutral, it's super easy to dress up your outfit with a bold lipstick, a headpiece, some chains, statement socks, a funky jacket... really whatever makes you feel like yourself! In honor of fashion queen Blair Waldorf I styled this outfit with a cheetah print headband to give more personality to the look.

Tips for buying basics: I try to make sure the fabric is 95-100% cotton; this helps lengthen the life of the fabric. Zara and Topshop generally carry good denim for under 50$ and you can especially save if you look for clothes off-season (i.e., buying shorts in the winter).

Look 2: Oui can do it

That pun was terrible, but to be fair I've also been stuck in my house for 7 weeks. Come at me. This look is what I envision the WWII era lady factory workers would wear today if they were gay (they probably were) and had a thing for neutral color schemes.

Again I picked this outfit because it's more practical- I can move around in it and it keeps me warm in the godforsaken bitter Canadian spring without sacrificing looking cute.

Here's a cute pic of me thinking about what the hell I'm going to do with my French degree 🙃

I like the cigarette cut of the pants because it gives it a retro vibe (there's clearly a theme here) that's perfect for mid-season. I think overalls are a really quirky piece that everyone should have in their wardrobe because they're like the gay version of a dress and make people question whether you went to art school or not.
